Camp Budoshin 2010 - It's YOUR Camp!   What do I need to do to get My Black Belt?

Welcome

Welcome to the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu Yudanshakai website. My name is George Kirby. I've been teaching traditional ju-jitsu since 1967. My goal is to help you master Budoshin JuJitsu for self-defense and earn your internationally recognized rank in this traditional martial art. I am offering you a solid instructional program based upon tradition combined with the use of modern technology to help you reach your goals in Budoshin Ju-Jitsu.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING . . .
Yes, I have been teaching Ju-Jitsu for over four decades as an avocation, but I am also a fully credentialled public school teacher who has designed instructional programs, trained teachers, and served as a resource for those who wished to improve their teaching skills, as I continued to improve mine. This continuous training, sense of professionalism, and desire to provide my students with a comprehensive and totally transparent educational process has carried over into how I will help you learn the art. [That's why there's so much information on this website.] There are no secrets and there are no surprises here. It's all up front so that you can concentrate on learning and achieving your goals. My responsibility, as your sensei, will be to act as a resource and be your guide as you learn and master the art of Budoshin Ju-Jitsu.

TRADITION . . .

Budoshin Ju-Jitsu is a traditional form of the art, based upon the teachings of Jack Seki and a lineage tracing back though Ibaragi Toshifusa [1597-1677] founder of Kito-Ryu Ju-jitsu, and Takagi Orieman Shigenbudo [1615-1711]  founder of Yoshin Ryu Ju-Jitsu. The strong emphasis on self-defense, efficient and smooth movement, and an inherent philosophy of honor, respect, self-control and non-violence, has made Budoshin Ju-Jitsu an extremely effective martial art even in today’s world. Experienced practitioners of Budoshin Ju-Jitsu have the ability to subtly thwart an attack with minimal effort, create varying levels of pain to subdue and control an assailant with little or no injury, or severely injure and incapacitate a violent attacker if necessary – all within a few seconds. Ju-Jitsu is the parent art of most of today’s martial arts and trends. Ju-Jitsu is used by military, law-enforcement and protective-service agencies throughout the world. If it wasn’t such an effective form of self-defense it wouldn’t have survived through the ages.

Budoshin Ju-Jitsu is designed to help you learn the traditional ju-jitsu and an effective personalized self-defense system at the same time. Ideally the best situation would be for you to learn Budoshin Ju-Jitsu in a dojo with a qualified sensei. The reality is that there are many people like you who would like to learn and master traditional Ju-Jitsu, but can’t find a dojo. Up until the mid 1990’s you were just out of luck. You could get some books on ju-jitsu [preferably mine], but beyond that you were left to your own devices.

SUPPORTED BY MODERN
TECHNOLOGY . . .
Starting in the 1990’s four major events occurred that changed the “traditional” manner in which ju-jitsu was taught. First, Panther Productions released my 8-DVD series which took students step by step from white belt up to shodan [and nidan if you use the DVDs wisely]. This DVD series made it possible for you to learn Budoshin Ju-Jitsu in your own home – or even in a non-ju-jitsu dojo. This was a major technological breakthrough that made a top-quality video program available for everyone who wanted to learn Budoshin Ju-Jitsu.

The second major event was the growth of the internet and changes in video and audio technology. The growth of the internet made this website and instant communication possible between you and me. This website has made it possible to present a great deal of up-to-date information to you in a clear and concise manner. Digital video and audio recording devices has made long-distance testing and evaluation possible. You can send video recordings [based upon testing formats in the Student and Black Belt Handbooks] to me for evaluation. I can send you digital audio evaluations [followed by written evaluations for higher ranks] in return.

The third major event has been the cross-referencing of techniques from my videos, my “Ohara” books, the “big book” and the techniques listed in the Student and Black Belt Handbooks. Whether you are in my dojo or in some distance location, you now have multiple references for techniques. All the materials are cross-referenced. There is no more guessing about what sensei is looking for on a performance exam.

The fourth major event was the conversion of all "core" printed documents to .pdf format. This includes the Student and Black Belt Handbooks, all issues of Kokoro, and the "Big Book." Students can now use any .pdf reader to search for specific items in any of these publications. This is especially true for the Big Book, where you can enter a technique name [in Japanese or English] or the technique reference or cross reference number [to Ohara books and Panther DVDs] and be immediately taken to that item on your computer. The conversion to .pdf has become a tremendous timesaver and reference tool for students and sensei alike.

EQUALS A PROGRAM MADE JUST FOR YOU!
All of this provides you with a unique and highly efficient instructional program to help you learn Budoshin Ju-Jitsu no matter where you are geographically. Modern technology has been integrated into making Budoshin Ju-Jitsu available for you to learn and master. All you need is a workout partner and safe mats to practice on. The rest is up to you. The Budoshin Ju-Jitsu program is a totally upfront and open system. There are no secrets and no surprises. In Budoshin Ju-Jitsu, whether it be in my dojo or on your own, you will always know where you are, where you’re going, and what you’ll have to do to get there. This openness and professionalism breeds success.

You want a black belt in Budoshin Ju-Jitsu? You can do it. If you’re willing to make the commitment my support is there for you to succeed. My goal is to help you meet your goal: earning your black belt in Budoshin Ju-Jitsu!
